Can Teenage Defiance Be Manipulated for Good?

rebell-teensRebellion and defiance have been part of the teenage years as long as there have been teenagers. Parents and adults in charge pull in one direction, teenagers pull in another.

An article in the New York Times examines the recent studies that show how this tendency for rebellion can be used to get teenagers to act for their own good.

“The brains of adolescents are notoriously more receptive to short-term rewards and peer approval, which can lead to risky behavior. But researchers and educators are noticing that young people are also more sensitive to notions of social justice and autonomy.
