How to Know When a Child’s Flu Turns Serious

This year, we have had an especially intense flu season, and the usual advice for parents of having their children rest, drink plenty of fluids and stay home from school might not be enough. When should parents realize that the flu is turning into something more serious and that their child needs to see a doctor?

“Most parents know they need to closely monitor children under 5 for any signs their illness is getting more severe. It’s important to pay even closer attention to babies and toddlers under 2, making sure they are getting enough liquids because they can easily become dehydrated.”

“And while the vast majority of otherwise healthy children will ride out a bout of influenza and recover rather quickly, a small number will develop potentially life-threatening complications that require immediate medical attention, Dr. Schaffner said.”
